Danfoss HERO goes back to school

Danfoss HERO goes back to school

HERO, the innovative Flushing Bypass Manifold solution developed by Danfoss, has saved significant man hours on site during the installation of a new biomass district heating system at an independent co-educational school in Dorset by energy experts, Flogas Britain.
In a bid to lower heating costs and improve security of supply, the school has replaced its old fuel oil and LPG heating system on a number of circuits with a new centralised energy centre with two biomass boilers and multiple oil boilers as back-up; with a district heating system serving the main school campus. A total of 37 Danfoss HERO units are installed in satellite plant rooms across the campus, connecting the district heating system to end-user demand and providing optimal balance and control in the heat network. As well as ensuring balance in all load conditions for increased user comfort and energy efficiency, HERO simplifies system flushing to the required BSRIA BG29/2012 standards and also allows measurement of water flow to detect problems such as blockages in the system.
Supplied pre-assembled and fully pressure tested, Danfoss HERO units consist of a Bypass H-Piece, AB-QM Pressure Independent Control Valve (PICV), Shut-Off Valves, Strainer with Integrated Drain and a Measuring Station. Commenting on behalf of Flogas, Design Manager, Ciaran Miller, says HERO offered a fast and easy solution for this challenging school project. “Delivered to site ready to install, HERO saved us significant time in terms of works on site. Their compact size also made them easy to install, particularly as some of the school’s plant rooms are rather cramped.” HERO’s small dimensions and a 90o angle between all service features (draining, setting and measuring) enables easy access under any installation condition, even where space is restricted.
According to Ciaran Miller, being factory-assembled was another major benefit of Danfoss HERO. “It provides a level of quality assurance that you simply can’t achieve when assembling individual components on site.” He was equally impressed with the quality of the components. “As you’d expect from a leading manufacturer like Danfoss, they are really top quality and we believe will stand the test of time.”
HERO units at the school are configured with Danfoss ECL 110 electronic controllers, set up to monitor temperatures on the demand side and change flow rates on the supply side to suit. Summing up, Ciaran Miller says: “The ECL controllers are straightforward to use and we believe our client will be well served for the lifetime of this RHI (Renewable Heat Incentive) accredited installation by all the Danfoss equipment employed here. We got great support from Danfoss throughout and with so many cost and time saving benefits, we will certainly consider using HERO units for future projects.”
